31 Days of Horror Reviews 2018: House of Dracula
You would think that House of Dracula would do something different, but it does the same thing as the last Monster Mash film.
REVIEW
It may not be the exact same thing as House of Frankenstein, but it does follow some of the same plot points: Dracula appears for a short amount of time, albeit a bit longer than the last film, is destroyed halfway through the film, Frankenstein’s Monster and the Wolf Man appear, a mad doctor decides to revive the Monster who’s only alive for the last few minutes of the film and both the doctor and the Monster die at the end.
Granted, making Dracula the main monster feels like it’s giving the character that started the Universal Monsters respect, but the feeling ends when he’s killed off yet again halfway through the film. Larry Talbot returns as well wanting to be free from the Wolf Man curse. How both come back to life after being killed in the last film is never explained.
Onslow Stevens who plays Dr. Edlemann is one of the more memorable performers of the film. In the second half, he’s infected with Dracula’s blood and slowly turns evil. He gives an absolutely menacing performance and the use of dramatic lighting really emphasize his performance.
That’s really all I can say about House of Dracula. It’s good, but not as good as House of Frankenstein.
